What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy supports meaningful engagement in activities, also known as ‘occupations’, of everyday life. An ‘occupation’ refers to any activity a person participates in, including self-care, productivity, and leisure. Occupational therapists use evidence-based and client-centered practices to promote independence and improved quality of life. They take a holistic approach to care, considering the person, environment, and occupation.

Pediatrics: What are child and youth occupations?

Childhood occupations can be categorized into the following:
Self-care, including feeding and eating, dressing, grooming, toileting, and sleep
Productivity, including academic-related activities (attending class, completing homework), and chores (cleaning, organization)
Leisure, including social (making friends, participating in community events, interacting with family), and play (sports, games, hobbies)

For children, OT plays a crucial role in their overall development. It helps them develop essential skills such as fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and sensory processing. Through playful activities and targeted interventions, occupational therapists assist children in reaching important developmental milestones. They focus on enhancing their cognitive, social, emotional, and self-help skills, setting a strong foundation for success at home, school and beyond.

What can Occupational Therapy help with?

Some of the common areas we support both adults and children include:
-Executive Functioning (including organization, attention, planning, impulse, flexibility, problem solving skills, and more)
-Pain management
-Energy conservation
-Stress and anxiety reducing skills
-Sensory processing
-Improving social skills
-Self-regulation
-Mindfulness
-Improve memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills
-Burnout recovery
-Time-management
-Goals planning
-Occupational balance
-Increasing self-esteem and confidence
-Daily routine, structure, and planning
-Sleep hygiene
-Selective sensory eating (picky eating) and expanding accepted/ preferred foods.
-Fine and gross motor skills
-Handwriting

How Occupational Therapy can help with mental health?

Occupational therapy extends its benefits to individuals struggling with mental health issues. Occupational therapists work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions to develop coping strategies, manage stress, and improve overall well-being. They incorporate therapeutic activities into their sessions, such as sensory-based strategies, mindfulness exercises, and stress management techniques, to promote emotional regulation and enhance quality of life.

Who may benefit from Occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a dynamic and diverse field that offers countless benefits to people from all walks of life. Whether you're a child with developmental delays, an adult recovering from burnout, or neurodivergent looking for affirming support, OT can make a significant impact on your life. Some of the people we support include:

-Autism: Receive tailored support that recognizes and builds on individuals unique strengths, intense interests, and abilities, fostering self-confidence and enhancing capacity in life.
-Neurodivergence/ ADHD’ers: Receive affirming personalized strategies and support to improve focus, organization, sensory differences, time management, and social skills.
-People with sensory processing differences: Individuals, who struggle with processing sensory information and need strategies to manage their unique sensory responses.
Individuals with mental health needs: Those dealing with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, benefiting from strategies to manage daily life and improve emotional well-being.
-Developmental delays: Receive customized interventions that foster growth in fine and gross motor skills, cognitive abilities, social interactions, and daily living skills, thereby supporting them in reaching their developmental milestones.
-Learning disabilities: Support for enhancing cognitive functions, fine motor skills, and organizational abilities.
-Behavioral concerns: Work with interventions that promote desired behavior, enhance self-regulation, and develop coping strategies, aiding in interpersonal relationships and everyday functioning.
-Individuals experiencing stress: Those suffering from home or work related stress, needing assistance to improve their wellbeing.

What can be accomplished through Occupational Therapy?

Some of areas that OTs work on include:
-Developing organization and planning skills to support academics and work.
-Learning sensory and coping strategies to support emotional regulation.
-Developing mindfulness and sleep hygiene techniques to support individuals after injury, illness or burnout.
-Teaching energy conservation techniques for individuals with chronic illnesses to manage fatigue.
-Improving attention and focus and social skills to support interpersonal relationships.

Speech-Language Pathology for Children

Our Speech-Language Pathology services support children in developing the communication skills they need to connect, learn, and thrive in everyday life. We work with children and families in a compassionate, strengths-based way that recognizes every child’s unique abilities, learning style, and pace of development.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) support more than just speech sounds. We help children with communication, language, and social interaction, always considering the whole child within their family, school, and community environments. Our approach is play-based, child-led, and developmentally appropriate, making therapy engaging while building real-world skills.

We collaborate closely with parents and caregivers, offering guidance, education, and practical strategies that can be used at home and in daily routines. Our goal is not only to support skill development, but also to build confidence, reduce frustration, and help children feel understood.

Our Speech-Language Pathology services may support children with:

🔹Speech sound development and clarity

🔹Expressive and receptive language delays

🔹Social communication and pragmatic language skills

🔹Literacy foundations and language for learning

🔹Neurodiversity-affirming communication support (including for autistic children)

We believe communication is a fundamental human need, and there is no single “right” way to communicate. Our SLPs work from an inclusive, neuroaffirming, and trauma-informed perspective, supporting children in ways that honour who they are—not who they’re expected to be.

Welcome, I’m Tanya Saunders, and I have been a dedicated dietitian for the past 19 years. I focus my care on the management and prevention of hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart disease. As well, as supporting clients with celiac disease.

My approach to nutrition is rooted in a deep understanding and a passion for helping others find joy and health in their food choices. I am a mother of two boys, and I’m well acquainted with the challenges and struggles that accompany the endeavor to nourish both myself and my family.

My personal journey began with my own diagnosis of Celiac Disease. This was not merely a professional challenge, but a profound change in my own lifestyle. I’ve learned to navigate the world of food in a way that honors my body’s needs: selecting groceries, crafting gluten-free meals at home, enjoying restaurants, and partaking in family gatherings—all through a lens of mindfulness and enjoyment without gluten.

Living with Celiac has deepened my empathy and connection with those facing similar dietary changes. I’ve experienced the learning curve firsthand, from understanding the right questions to ask when offered food, to becoming adept at reading food labels. I’ve also come to appreciate that Celiac Disease manifests uniquely for each person, with a spectrum of symptoms and a variety of discovery stories, all influenced by different support systems from home, work, and friends.

I understand that grieving the loss of gluten-containing foods is a journey, not a one-time event. It’s a path I walk myself, continually discovering and delighting in gluten-free choices that are both healthy and satisfying. I am here to share with you the facts, the support, and the companionship you need on your own journey with Celiac.

By choosing to work with me, you’re not just selecting a dietitian. You’re choosing a nutrition coach who has lived through the same challenges that a gluten-free life entails. Together, we will explore a world where your diet is not limited but enriched. Let’s embark on this path to wellness with joy and understanding.

Welcome, I’m Tanya Saunders, and I have been a dedicated dietitian for the past 19 years. I focu... Read More

I understand the all-too-human predicaments of dissatisfaction, and the efforts to make change, reduce suffering, and “get it right.” We all have good intentions, but sometimes it’s hard to see the way forward, to feel ok about ourselves, to simply cope.

I’m a systemic therapist (RMFT) who works with individuals, couples, and families, and I would like to work with you to help you make sense of where you are, and move forward with new skills and greater understanding and self-compassion.

People I work with: - Individuals, couples, parents, families - Children and youth - 2SLGBTQI+ - People of diverse backgrounds - Aging and elderly people

Areas of specialty: - Trauma and family of origin issues - Relational issues - Disordered eating - Addictions -Mental health issues – anxiety, depression, personality disorders -Communication and conflict resolution -Parenting -Divorce, separation, blended families, family transitions -Sexuality

I am well-versed in many therapy models, and will adapt my approach to what suits the client best. In sessions, according to client interest and need, I may incorporate mindfulness, solution-focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, schema therapy, internal family systems therapy, emotionally focused and attachment therapy, intergenerational family therapy, relational life therapy, expressive arts, and/or EMDR.

If you’d like to learn more, please contact me for a fifteen-minute free consultation, or book a therapy session with me now.

Hi, I’m Lara, a Registered Social Worker with the Manitoba College of Social Workers. I hold a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Manitoba and a Master of Social Work from the University of Calgary. I am a first generation immigrant from the Philippines.

I believe that people already carry strengths, insight, and resilience—even when life feels overwhelming or uncertain. My role is to help you reconnect with those strengths while offering practical support, compassionate listening, and space to explore what’s getting in the way.

I work from a strengths-based, person-centred, and trauma-informed approach, supporting youth and young adults (ages 16–29) who may be navigating anxiety, emotional stress, eating disorder recovery, identity exploration, or major life transitions. I also bring experience working alongside immigrant and refugee youth, with a deep respect for cultural identity, lived experience, and the challenges that come with adaptation and change.

In our work together, I focus on building a strong therapeutic relationship grounded in trust, empathy, and collaboration. Sessions often include gentle problem-solving, goal-setting, and psychoeducation—always at a pace that feels supportive and aligned with your needs. I strive to create a non-judgmental, affirming space where you can speak openly, feel heard, and explore both challenges and possibilities.

People often come to me when they’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of their next steps. Together, we can work toward greater emotional balance, self-understanding, and confidence in navigating life’s complexities. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach—our work is shaped by your values, culture, and goals.

I would be honoured to walk alongside you on your journey.

Fully bilingual in English and Tagalog.

Areas of support include: - Anxiety and stress management - Eating disorders and relationship with food - Self-esteem and self-worth - Life transitions and identity changes - Cultural adaptation and adjustment - Family and relationship challenges - Emotional health and resilience

Donna Edwards brings nearly 40 years of experience supporting families through their infant feeding journeys with compassion, skill, and deep respect for each family’s unique story. She has worked across hospital, home, and community settings, giving her a broad and practical understanding of the many ways feeding challenges can arise — and how they can be thoughtfully addressed.

Donna is passionate about helping families build confidence and connection through feeding, whether that involves initiating breastfeeding, navigating challenges along the way, re-lactation after disruptions, or supporting the transition through weaning. She believes that there is no one “right” way to feed a baby, and that care should always honour a family’s goals, values, and lived experience.

Families often seek Donna’s support for:

⚪ Breastfeeding initiation and early feeding challenges

⚪ Latch difficulties, pain, or nipple trauma

⚪ Low milk supply, oversupply, and pumping support

⚪ Infant weight gain and feeding effectiveness

⚪ Supplementing, combination feeding, and formula support

⚪ Re-lactation after illness, separation, or other interruptions

⚪ Weaning and feeding transitions

⚪ Emotional support around feeding stress or uncertainty

Donna’s approach is collaborative, gentle, and empowering. She works alongside families to develop practical, individualized plans that fit their real lives and provides evidence-informed guidance in a calm, reassuring manner. “Thank you for wording it that way, I’m so relieved you understand my situation, it makes me feel better”- Client dealing with binge eating, stress, and trauma

Hello, my name is Ciji Khan and I am a Registered Social Worker in Manitoba with the Manitoba College of Social Workers. I have a Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Manitoba, and a Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology Degree through Yorkville University.

With a combination of work and life experience, I started my journey in the helping field working with high-risk and at risk youth in the child welfare system and then progressed to working with adults in the justice system. I have over 15 years’ worth of experience working with children and their families and adults dealing with mental health and addiction issues. I also have experience working with people facing and dealing with homelessness, neurodivergent individuals, and people dealing with anxiety, trauma, eating disorders and depression.

I believe life is a journey and sometimes along the way we all need help with dealing with life’s challenges. I work from a person-centered, strength-based perspective and have the most experience in utilizing the CBT modality, and using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) as a primary therapy. CBT Mainly deals with looking at how our thoughts and emotions affect our behaviours and confronting negative thinking to change it into more positive perceptions and ways of thinking. EMDR looks at pointing out all triggers that affect one’s life in a negative fashion and helps an individual process past and present memories and triggers that have negative thoughts connected to those triggers and memories and replace those thoughts with more positive and aspiring thoughts to help an individual smoothly navigate through their life.

You can be assured that when you come to me for help you will be given the respect and dignity all humans deserve and are in a safe and non-judgmental space to be your own and true authentic self.

It would be an honor to earn your trust and respect and be able to walk with you on your healing journey!
