What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy supports meaningful engagement in activities, also known as ‘occupations’, of everyday life. An ‘occupation’ refers to any activity a person participates in, including self-care, productivity, and leisure. Occupational therapists use evidence-based and client-centered practices to promote independence and improved quality of life. They take a holistic approach to care, considering the person, environment, and occupation.

Pediatrics: What are child and youth occupations?

Childhood occupations can be categorized into the following:
Self-care, including feeding and eating, dressing, grooming, toileting, and sleep
Productivity, including academic-related activities (attending class, completing homework), and chores (cleaning, organization)
Leisure, including social (making friends, participating in community events, interacting with family), and play (sports, games, hobbies)

For children, OT plays a crucial role in their overall development. It helps them develop essential skills such as fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and sensory processing. Through playful activities and targeted interventions, occupational therapists assist children in reaching important developmental milestones. They focus on enhancing their cognitive, social, emotional, and self-help skills, setting a strong foundation for success at home, school and beyond.

What can Occupational Therapy help with?

Some of the common areas we support both adults and children include:
-Executive Functioning (including organization, attention, planning, impulse, flexibility, problem solving skills, and more)
-Pain management
-Energy conservation
-Stress and anxiety reducing skills
-Sensory processing
-Improving social skills
-Self-regulation
-Mindfulness
-Improve memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills
-Burnout recovery
-Time-management
-Goals planning
-Occupational balance
-Increasing self-esteem and confidence
-Daily routine, structure, and planning
-Sleep hygiene
-Selective sensory eating (picky eating) and expanding accepted/ preferred foods.
-Fine and gross motor skills
-Handwriting

How Occupational Therapy can help with mental health?

Occupational therapy extends its benefits to individuals struggling with mental health issues. Occupational therapists work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions to develop coping strategies, manage stress, and improve overall well-being. They incorporate therapeutic activities into their sessions, such as sensory-based strategies, mindfulness exercises, and stress management techniques, to promote emotional regulation and enhance quality of life.

Who may benefit from Occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) is a dynamic and diverse field that offers countless benefits to people from all walks of life. Whether you're a child with developmental delays, an adult recovering from burnout, or neurodivergent looking for affirming support, OT can make a significant impact on your life. Some of the people we support include:

-Autism: Receive tailored support that recognizes and builds on individuals unique strengths, intense interests, and abilities, fostering self-confidence and enhancing capacity in life.
-Neurodivergence/ ADHD’ers: Receive affirming personalized strategies and support to improve focus, organization, sensory differences, time management, and social skills.
-People with sensory processing differences: Individuals, who struggle with processing sensory information and need strategies to manage their unique sensory responses.
Individuals with mental health needs: Those dealing with mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, benefiting from strategies to manage daily life and improve emotional well-being.
-Developmental delays: Receive customized interventions that foster growth in fine and gross motor skills, cognitive abilities, social interactions, and daily living skills, thereby supporting them in reaching their developmental milestones.

Follow-up appointments with parents and caregivers are recommended to be weekly until it is indicated that appointments can be spaced out further apart. Follow-up length will be recommended at the time of the initial assessment and can range from 30 min appointments to 50 min appointments.

Welcome, I’m Tanya Saunders, and I have been a dedicated dietitian for the past 19 years. I focus my care on the management and prevention of hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart disease. As well, as supporting clients with celiac disease.

My approach to nutrition is rooted in a deep understanding and a passion for helping others find joy and health in their food choices. I am a mother of two boys, and I’m well acquainted with the challenges and struggles that accompany the endeavor to nourish both myself and my family.

My personal journey began with my own diagnosis of Celiac Disease. This was not merely a professional challenge, but a profound change in my own lifestyle. I’ve learned to navigate the world of food in a way that honors my body’s needs: selecting groceries, crafting gluten-free meals at home, enjoying restaurants, and partaking in family gatherings—all through a lens of mindfulness and enjoyment without gluten.

Living with Celiac has deepened my empathy and connection with those facing similar dietary changes. I’ve experienced the learning curve firsthand, from understanding the right questions to ask when offered food, to becoming adept at reading food labels. I’ve also come to appreciate that Celiac Disease manifests uniquely for each person, with a spectrum of symptoms and a variety of discovery stories, all influenced by different support systems from home, work, and friends.

I understand that grieving the loss of gluten-containing foods is a journey, not a one-time event. It’s a path I walk myself, continually discovering and delighting in gluten-free choices that are both healthy and satisfying. I am here to share with you the facts, the support, and the companionship you need on your own journey with Celiac.

By choosing to work with me, you’re not just selecting a dietitian. You’re choosing a nutrition coach who has lived through the same challenges that a gluten-free life entails. Together, we will explore a world where your diet is not limited but enriched. Let’s embark on this path to wellness with joy and understanding.

“Thank you for wording it that way, I’m so relieved you understand my situation, it makes me feel better”- Client dealing with binge eating, stress, and trauma

Hello, my name is Ciji Khan and I am a Registered Social Worker in Manitoba with the Manitoba College of Social Workers. I have a Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Manitoba, and a Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology Degree through Yorkville University.

With a combination of work and life experience, I started my journey in the helping field working with high-risk and at risk youth in the child welfare system and then progressed to working with adults in the justice system. I have over 15 years’ worth of experience working with children and their families and adults dealing with mental health and addiction issues. I also have experience working with people facing and dealing with homelessness, neurodivergent individuals, and people dealing with anxiety, trauma, eating disorders and depression.

I believe life is a journey and sometimes along the way we all need help with dealing with life’s challenges. I work from a person-centered, strength-based perspective and have the most experience in utilizing the CBT modality, and using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) as a primary therapy. CBT Mainly deals with looking at how our thoughts and emotions affect our behaviours and confronting negative thinking to change it into more positive perceptions and ways of thinking. EMDR looks at pointing out all triggers that affect one’s life in a negative fashion and helps an individual process past and present memories and triggers that have negative thoughts connected to those triggers and memories and replace those thoughts with more positive and aspiring thoughts to help an individual smoothly navigate through their life.

You can be assured that when you come to me for help you will be given the respect and dignity all humans deserve and are in a safe and non-judgmental space to be your own and true authentic self.

It would be an honor to earn your trust and respect and be able to walk with you on your healing journey!

Hello and Welcome!

Let me tell you a bit about my professional training and experience. I am a master’s prepared registered social worker. In 1991 I completed a clinical practicum where the focus was “Blending A Feminist Perspective with a Cognitive Behavioral Approach to the Treatment of Women with Eating Disorders” through the Health Sciences Centre/University of Manitoba.

I was hired on at the Health Sciences Centre and begun work in the area of pediatric oncology for 5 years. I learned then about the effects of illness on children/youth and their families.

I moved to Child and Adolescent Mental Health where I spent about a decade working with families. I became familiar with mental health issues and diagnoses for children and youth and first learned about Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (“DBT”). DBT is a well-researched approach which focuses on acceptance and change. It explains human emotions (why we have them and how they work) so that we can learn to be more skillful in responding to difficult or distressing feelings.

I then moved to Adult Mental Health and was a therapist for 9 years on the Short-Term Assessment and Treatment (“STAT”) team. I worked with individuals and co facilitated groups. The treatment approach had a continued focus on DBT.

Lastly, I have also done employee assistance counselling (“EAP”) at Manitoba Blue Cross for 6 years and some brief contract work with the Manitoba Teacher’s Society. Most recently I worked at Cancer Care and Thrive Counselling.

My approach draws heavily on DBT but also CBT which looks at how our thoughts and beliefs influence our feelings and ultimately our behavior. Providing a safe place for you to feel heard and to help you increase your understanding of yourself is fundamental to my practice. I understand individuals in the context of their family, culture and society at large. Social Workers look at people in a holistic way and recognize strengths and resiliency.

If you are struggling, particularly now during the pandemic finding emotional support and strategies to cope can certainly help through a difficult time. I would be honored to work with you.
